Cubsthepoet - March 2025

As we close the month , we would like to shine light upon Chris Davenport otherwise known as Cubsthepoet (@Cubsthepoet). Cubs is a painter and poet that was born in Baton Rouge, but raised in New Orleans and the DMV area. Growing up was a very imaginative child and says that he often didn't pay much attention in school because of his selective awareness. He knew that school was needed, but wasn't serving his purpose at that time. So aware that he was being groomed for preparation and not his present. He recalls times being in detention and instead of writing a sentence multiple times he would ask if he could write something else or read a book. He says " I know that I'm being prepped and groomed for the future but what am I right now?" This would continue into college as he would study psychology. He would not only read the books that were taught, but go beyond and read other texts by psychologists. This would bring him to Alfred Adler, the founder of individual psychology. He realized that people who are deemed inventors or founders were fueled by feelings. This resonated with him because he feels that feelings have driven him his whole life and shaped his creative style.

Cubs started writing poems in 2011, with the first being named. "Do you like poetry?" He feels that people have a hard time pulling out the poetry within themselves, which is why he started to do personal poetry. He does "Free Therapy" which is a form of poetry for groups as well as "Poetraits" that are custom paintings of people fueled through conversation. Cubs is inspired by his family and the life that he lives. Being able to watch his children grow, having conversations with people, and living brings out more understanding of how things work. He puts great importance on being present and aware in life. This also ties this with important moments in his life. He can't pinpoint one exact moment as times like the birth of his children to cookouts with his parents have helped shaped his creative process. A notable collaboration that he has done is with local jewelry brand Mignon Faget (@mignonfagetltd) on glass cups. This was a special collab for him, because it was very genuine on the entire process. He was allowed to go to the designer's personal studio and paint her a portrait as well. This was special to him, because your studio is a sacred space for a creative.

Looking into the future, Cubs has two visions: having an exhibit on a mountain top where people would walk up stairs, get a poem and painting, then walk down another set after receiving them. The other is a lifetime of creating and having the funding to do whatever comes to mind freely. This goes along with living out in the country with his family. If you are looking to learn more about Cubs, or get a personal poem/painting you can visit his website cubsthepoet.net or his instagram. He also does his open studio on Thursdays from 5pm-8pm just send him a message for the address.

"If you don't have an answer to the question "what is something you love about yourself?" you should come visit me at the Soul Study and let's talk about it". - Cubsthepoet
